University of Rijeka Department of Polytechnics was initiated in 1953, when a Senior Professional Pedagogical School was founded in Rijeka, where teachers of professional, theoretical and practical teaching at the then vocational schools were educated. During the course of the evolutionary reform of education, the Department launched a university undergraduate study of Polytechnics and a graduate study of Polytechnics and Informatics.

The Department currently participates in three EU funded projects: "Network of Fishers and Scientists", "Children and Youth Development through STEM" and "Development of Innovative Marine Power Systems".
